Recycling of laminates

Plastic packaging often consists of multilayer laminate films. For this complex system of different materials, there has been no suitable recycling process. In the project "Circular Packaging", which started at the end of 2018, a demonstration plant is now being built on an industrial scale. Packaging waste can be made suitable for reuse as high quality packaging material. The basis for this is the ‚CreaSolv‘ process developed at the German Fraunhofer Institute for Process Engineering and Packaging IVV.


Multilayer laminate films consists of various polymers, such as PE / PA or PP / PET and aluminum layers. Such composites perform functions that monomaterials do not offer. An example of this is the effective protection of food and consumer goods from light or oxygen. When recycling, however, the individual materials of the packaging must be separated. This is not yet possible, which is why such a waste stream is considered non-recyclable and is thermally recovered normally. With the development of the solvent-based CreaSolv process, a separation of plastic composites and contaminated household waste has been realized for the first time. This technology is suitable for the production of high-quality and high-purity plastics with new product quality. Even odors and contaminants are safely eliminated. The CreaSolv process is currently available on a pilot plant scale. In the »Circular Packaging« project, the process is now being implemented and operated with a system geared towards profitability.
