The US thinktank RethinkX, in their report ‘Rethinking Food and Agriculture 2020-2030’ forecast that in the next 10yrs plant-based and microbiologically produced food will gain market share and that classic meat and milk production will have to reckon with equally large losses. They expect the number of cattle in the US will halve by 2030. This will be accompanied by a similar drop in sales, while production costs in conventional agriculture will double.
The report says: “We are on the threshold of the deepest, fastest and most consistent upheaval in food and agricultural production since its invention. This is primarily due to a decline in the value of protein. The cost of proteins will be reduced fivefold by 2030. By 2035, the cost of protein produced by fermentation will be one-tenth that of existing animal proteins. This means that by 2030 modern food will be of higher quality and much cheaper. Compared to the use of animal resources, half as much raw material has to be processed for them. Alternative products will be 10-25 times more raw material efficient, 20 times more time efficient and 10 times more water efficient than animal products. The cow’s milk processing industry will be almost bankrupt by 2030.”
