Session 3 of the „A Green Future for European Dairy“ forum organised by European Dairy Association on 16 Nov in Dublin centered on the future potential of dairy ingredients. Moderated by Dr. Miriam Ryan, Dairy Industry Ireland, the forum highlighted the importance of public and privately founded R&D for the dairy business.

James Neville, Volac, advocated for using different, specific streams of raw material, in his case whey, to be able to manufacture exactly the right ingredients for the specific case uf use. Claire McGee, Ibec, explained how Ireland will become a global leader in R&D by 2020 in an movement very much fueled by the importance that milk has for the country. Bill Morrissey, Glanbia Ireland, explained the AgriChemWhey Program which uses disruptive biotechnology to overcome the fact that whey permeate is the bottleneck in whey processing. AgriChemWhey focuses on polylactid acid that can be used in a wide variety of products. There is now a pilot plant installation in Lisheen and the project partners hope to get to a commercial scale by 2023.
