no thread. This adjustment may therefore
occasionally lead to sulfuric acid escape and
injuries. When adjusting a PP-butyrometer
the new patented plastic closure is screwed
in or out via a thread which is sealed by a
sulfuric acid proof sliding plastic seal. During
centrifugation at 350 G the plastic closure
needs to be supplemented by a metal stabilization
Are there differences in read off precision?
No. Only the comfort is improved. The scale
is applied by screen printing process and the
color is resistant. Only when the scale cannot
be read off any more the PP butyrometer is
unusable unless cloudiness occurs earlier. We
do not have experiences so far.
How do you judge the reproducibility of
The reproducibility is identical with the glass
butyrometer. Validation data can be transferred
1:1 which has been proven by experiences
of an independent laboratory. PP-butyrometers
are easy to clean under flowing
water since they have two openings. Dimensions
are identical allowing the use of the
same centrifuges at identical rotational speed
Obviously a new product with a number
of advantages will enter the market. Do
you intend to offer glass butyrometers
in the future?
Well, the manufacture of PP-butyrometers is
a highly elaborate process because the mould
injection tool is expensive. Actually we are offering
more than 50 different glass butyrometers
for various applications. Therefore it does not
make sense to replace them all with PP butyrometers.
We will start with a standard PP butyrometer
for milk fat analysis from zero to 9% fat. The
same butyrometer can also be used for the van
Gulik method using an adjusted scale reaching
from zero to 30% fat. We will consider a further
butyrometer according to van Gulik up to
40% fat but not at this point in time. In other
words we will continue to offer the full range of
glass butyrometers. The new PP butyrometer is
targeting at the dairy industry due to high numbers
in that sector. Labs preferring glass butyrometers
will benefit from the full range of glass
butyrometers in the future.

are convincing. Are there further

An expensive step in the production of glass butyrometers
is the conformity verification process.
We are currently targeting at verifying the conformity
of the mould injection tool in order to
replace the individual conformity verification of
each butyrometer. This holds true for Germany
and some other countries within the EC requiring
this conformity verification. Therefore we will be
able to offer the PP butyrometers at a reasonable
price for German, EC and international customers.
