FOOD-Lab International
broadens its scope
Increasing public awareness regarding the toxicity of diverse
pesticides such as Glyphosate have encouraged us to interview
Hans Mol of the RIKILT Research Center at the University in Wangeningen,
NL in order to take a closer look at the subject. Mol is
one of the leading experts in this area. But food also comes into
contact with many other toxic substances such as printing ink on
packaging materials or foods may contain pyrrolizidin alcaloids.
Sophisticated high end analytical systems detect them all. FOODLab
International presents some of these advanced methods. We
also would like to promote the RAFA (Recent Advances in Food
Analysis) conference program later this year in Prague that will
cover all topics of interest. The University Wageningen and the
University of Chemistry and Technology of Prague are co-sponsors
of this bi-annual event.
At the same time authorities and the public are getting
more serious about nutrition labeling. People are interested in
a more personalized nutrition while the rate of life-style-related
sicknesses increases: 45 m diabetes II cases are reported in the
EU; we expect 69m by 2045 says the EC Commission. 22% of
the total population are obese, 50% are overweight. Several
governments are looking at new rulings. We had published the
french nutri-score system already.
In this edition the Potsdam Institute for Nutrition (DIFE)
elaborates on nutrition for the elderly, an increasing part of
our population. Industry needs to understand what exactly the
expectations of the population are and how to meet market
demands with latest technologies. Industry 4.0 is one of the key
words. We have talked to Tetra Paks Vice President Ola Elmqvist
in Lissabon at the Zenith Global Dairy Summit. He has pointed
out what his visions are. Another interesting point is made by
Krones AG, another leading company in the area of innovative
processing and cleaning technologies.
eFOOD-lab International will continue to expand its topics
and strive for a larger vision of food processing technologies
and the corresponding analytical methods and regulations.
I wish you a nice read.
Yours
Thomas Kützemeier
