Calls for Flexibility in New FSMA Updates Thomas Kützemeier Editor-in-Chief www.mcongressconsult.de The US Food and Drug Administration released proposed revisions to four rules for implementing portions of the Food Safety Modernization Act (FSMA). The updates, which cover preventive controls for human food, preventive controls for animal food, foreign supplier verification programs and produce safety, reflect significant changes requested by the food industry and other parties involved in the food supply chain. eFOOD-Lab International has them all: Allen R. Sayler, a long-term expert with the US Government and in later years a senior advisor at IDFA and other international fora describes the novelties and discusses how to behave best in order to avoid disadvantages or even penalties. Steffen Uhlig (CEO of QuoData) and Ravinder Reddy (US FDA) describe in detail how to advance laboratory culture thru effective Proficiency testing and data analysis, in line with the new FSMA protocol of the FDA. With the aforementioned state-of-the-art information and the new Transatlantic Trade and Investment Partnership TTIP coming closer, eFOOD-Lab International is at the forefront of international partnering for all companies in Europe interested in food exports to the U.S.A. when it comes to food safety. On another issue, eFOOD-Lab International focuses on a new technology emerging at the horizon: Low-Temperature-Atmospheric Pressure Plasma seems to be a promising process for the inactivation of microorganism on food surfaces, says Kai Reineke et. al. of the Leibniz Institute on Agricultural and Plasma Sciences in Potsdam and Greifswald, DE. The Leibniz Insitute of Vegetable and Ornamental Crops, Großbeeren, DE is elaborating on technologies to analyse volatile aroma compounds by GC-MS. Prof. Baldermann explains this innovative technology which will impact the opportunities for new foods with outstanding sensory sensations. As a guest Editorial, Derk Wilten, CEO of the Rotterdam (NL) based Synchron Lab Automation underlines the cost saving automation technology options of High Throughput Experiments in the industry. Routine workflows with high numbers of samples can be a real burden for all companies. High Throughput Technologies show ways how to get out of this dead end street. I hope you enjoy reading our latest news on food analytics and don’t forget to save the date and register today for the Anuga FoodTec, 24-27 March 2015, the world’s biggest foodonly Trade Fair on Processing, Packaging and Food Safety with a focus on Food Analytics.
